What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art and is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Originally developed for self-defence, BJJ is an effective ground-fighting style which uses leverage and technique to allow a smaller, weaker person to successfully defend against a bigger, stronger opponent. Not only is BJJ extremely effective, but a lot of fun! Furthermore, the unique training methodology of ISOHEALTH’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sessions help our students to become capable martial artists in a safe and encouraging environment.
Why should I train BJJ?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the only martial arts that allows students to practice their skills using full speed and power against a fully resisting opponent. The intensity of BJJ resembles the effort used in a real fight, making it a fantastic art to learn for self-defence. Although none us of us want to consider the thought that we may end up in a fight at some point in our lives, we cannot ignore the fact that it can and does happen. The majority of real fights and attacks end up in the clinch or on the ground so it is definitely worth learning what to do to defend yourself effectively through the use of BJJ.
Additional benefits of practicing BJJ include:
- improved fitness and cardiovascular health
- improved flexibility
- greater strength
- improved resilience
- improved ability to get up back to your feet from the ground
- improved self-esteem and confidence
- it’s a lot of fun!
Can anyone do BJJ?
They sure can! The level of resistance you use is up to you and your training partner so anyone can do BJJ; it is great for both men and women and for people of any size and fitness-level. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is also great for smaller people as size is not a factor; techniques and submissions allow the smaller student to defeat an opponent of greater size and strength.
More importantly, BJJ is fantastic for learning how to control a fight from a positional standpoint (allowing you to then apply any number of tactics including fleeing, striking, gouging, etc.) The art of BJJ forms a terrific platform for almost any form of self defence tactic.

This progression allows participants to train without the fear of injury or feeling overwhelmed.
Our BJJ classes follow the format below:

ISOHEALTH also offers open mat sessions which allow students to consolidate their training through sparring or drilling techniques.
What is ISOHEALTH’s stance on BJJ for competition vs. self defence or as a hobby?
At ISOHEALTH we believe that self-defence is a critical part of the art of BJJ and it is taught to all of our members as a fundamental skill. We also provide training to our members in the competition/sport side of BJJ and our team members have enjoyed a great degree of success. ISOHEALTH is one of Adelaide’s top BJJ gyms and has produced Gold Medal winners in International, Pan-Pacific, National, State and local competitions.
We gladly assist our ISOHEALTH members with the help they need to succeed in their chosen arena of competition but there is never any pressure on anyone to compete. In fact some of best grapplers and fighters do not compete at all, it’s all just a matter of what you enjoy and what your goals are with your training. Competing (or not competing) has no influence whatsoever on your progress through the BJJ belts/ranks, if you’re good enough for your next belt then you will be awarded that belt, if not then you will receive it once you’ve improved to the required level.
